GFA Mourns the Loss of Paul Gerrits

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of a great friend of the GFA, and a great supporter of the guitar. Canadian Paul Gerrits passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, after years of heart problems. Paul was a wonderful guitarist and pedagogue, breaking ground in Canada in many areas throughout his career. Many of us came to know him as a publisher and founder of Les Editions Doberman-Yppan.

Paul Gerrits’involvement with GFA was extensive and long running. Paul was a four time convention host (1983 Quebec; 1994 Quebec, 1998 Montreal, and 2004 Montreal); a regular vendor with Doberman; and most recently, generously funded the commissioning and publication of the set pieces for the past several years of the International Concert Artist Competition. Paul was a true professional to work with in every arena, and incredibly generous with his time and resources. The GFA inducted Paul Gerrits into the GFA Hall of Fame, honoring him with the Industry Leadership Award in 2008.

We extend our sincere condolences to Paul’s family. He will be greatly missed by his friends at GFA, and by guitarists around the world.
