RGC Presents Fingerstyle Guitar Champion Tim Thompson & his son, Myles, on violin, April 3, 2013

Rochester Guitar Club welcomed the Nashville based father-son duo, Tim and Myles Thompson for the first concert of the season in the plush surroundings of the beautiful Red Room at 1010 East Ave on Wednesday April 3 at 7:30 p.m. I had gone to hear Tim and Myles in Syracuse Monday night and so had a preview of the Wednesday performance. They also appeared on Scott Regan’s radio show Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM on WRUR 88.5 FM.

Tim and Myles Thompson are a Nashville based, award-winning Americana-jazz duo featuring acoustic guitar, violin, and vocals to entertain music lovers of all ages. This father-son act presents fiery instrumental and vocal duets, inspired by legendary artists. Theirs is a mixed bag of: ‘70’s era Jazz Fusion guitar meets Stephane Grappelli, evoking Chick Corea, Weather Report, The Chieftains, a hint of Doc Watson, Al DiMeola, Papa John Creech and Carlos Jobim…and the list goes on! Then there’s the stereo-typical-singer-songwriter meets the stereo-typical country-studio-musician with all-the-chops-there-are aspect of it, delivering young, spirited, and intelligent music.

Here are a few of the songs played on solo guitar: “The Flintstones/Eleanor Rigby;” twin guitar/fiddle lines delivering first “The Clarinet Polka,” then “Donna Lee” (quintessential Charlie Parker), “The Hallelujah Chorus” played like “The Lone Ranger” (on solo guitar) and it worked! Chick Corea’s “Spain”, Weather Report’s “Birdland”, every jazz musician’s “Black Orpheus,” and a bunch of funky and thoughtful originals. There were Celtic flavored rock tunes, Brazilian sambas, reels, and continuously blurred boundaries where power chords were on equal footing with complex jazz changes. Father and son, guitar and fiddle. It was a great show!
