At 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015, the Rochester Guitar Club began an exciting new series of round robin sessions outside of our regular meeting venue. This first session, a benefit by the church for the “Friends in Service Here” (FISH) took place at the First Presbyterian Church of Honeoye Falls where we were warmly recieved by Pastor Val Fowler and staff. After a gracious introduction by Sue Wiegand, Kinloch Nelson described the club’s purpose and methods for the thirty-some persons in attendance. The thirteen guitarists from RGC and Pastor Fowler were then introduced individually by Richard Taglieri.
Each of the thirteen players began with intriguing comments on their choice of music for the day. As always, there was an interesting mix of styles from blues to classical as well as originals. A couple of our players, Bernie Lehmann and Kevin Mathers are professional luthiers while others, Kinloch Nelson and Jim Hill are talented amateur instrument makers. They have at times played the instruments they made at meetings. Highlights included Lou Alano’s touching account of his sister’s passing with a gentle song to commemorate her life, and Steve Hahn’s unusual Chapman Stick, a novelty to everyone present. Here’s the play list:
Deb Ross, “The Shoemaker’s Wife,” a toy (John Dowland)
Jeremy Carter, “Moon River” (Henry Mancini)
Paul Schickling, “Finale” from Sonatina III, op. 71 (Mauro Giuliani)
Jim Hill, “Isale” & “Hame Pile” (traditional Hawaiin)
Joe Palumbos, “Blue Moon” medley
George Aparicio, Spanish songs
John Williamson, “Winter Wonderland” (Felix Bernard)
Lou Alano, “Hanging in There” (original)
Val Fowler, “Anji” (Davey Graham)
Kevin Mathers, “Danny Boy” (Frederic Weatherly)
Jason Cornwell, “un Dia de Noviembre” (Leo Brouwer)
Bernie Lehmann, “Blind Mary” (Turlough O’Carolan)
Kinloch Nelson, “If I Fell” (Lennon/MacCartney)
Steve Hahn, “What is Hip?” (Tower of Power)
Deb Ross, “A Toy for Two Lutes” (after Thomas Robinson)
Jeremy Carter, “Deep River Blues” (Doc Watson)
Paul Shickling, “Andantino Sostenuto” & “Tempo di Marcia” from Sonatina III, op. 71 (Mauro Giuliani)
Val Fowler, “Hyfrydol” (Welsh Hymn Tune)
Jim Hill, “Ashokan Farewell” (Jay Ungar)
Church member Jim Hill appropriately finished the session with the beautiful “Ashokan Farewell.” Everyone then adjourned for cookies and conversation among and audience. Pastor Fowler with the approval of the audience invited us to return some time in the future. We enthusiastically accepted the invitation!
