The RGC Round Robin Meeting this month featured several surprises. The trio of Tom Napoli, Ken Luk, and John Williamson played an Italian Mazurka featuring Tom & Ken on mandolins, with John on nylon string guitar.
Bernie Lehmann brought his two newly built replicas of guitars designed in the 1820-1850 era by influential luthier, René LaCote. Each of Bernie’s guitars had its own unique tonal and design characteristics, which were clearly demonstrated when Bernie switched back and forth between each guitar while he played his round robin selection!
Ken Luk first played his selection on his steel-string guitar outfitted with custom colored strings, which his students find intriguing. Ken played in Andy McKee’s percussive-tapping-fingerpicking style. After the round robin, he played his piece again through Jerry Carter’s PA system, using first his own acoustic-electric guitar, then Kinloch’s Lehmann-built acoustic-electric guitar.
